Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Required Skills and Knowledge

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit; including evidence of the ability to:

hand spread asphalt on at least two different occasions, including:

hand spreading at least 5m2 of asphalt (per patch) to line and level without segregation, including:

~ two patches over 50mm thick, each with a different type of asphalt

~ two patches under 50mm thick, each with a different type of asphalt.

working with a paver to lay at least 100 lineal metres of longitudinal joint and two transverse joints.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply legislation, documentation, policies and procedures required for hand spreading asphalt

work with others to complete the hand spreading of asphalt that meets required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems

using signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone
